CUBS DISCOVER FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

The Cubs Baseball Club is an organisation that has faced some large challenges throughout its history, however none quite like what faced the club in March 2017.

Cubs had to undergo a massive rebuild at the start of the current 2017 Cairns Baseball League season, with 8 members of their 2016 team unable to return due to work reasons. "That's a tough task to overcome" said Head Coach Grant Behrendorf. "To basically loose your entire A Grade team, tends to put you firmly behind the eight ball. However the Club were adamant that we would overcome that issue and with our youth policy I think we are building a really good foundation." The CBL brought sweeping changes in during 2016 allowing for U16 players to be eligible to play in both A and B grades. Behrendorf accredits that change for the Cubs rebuild. "Without that change, our young players would not have been eligible and the club would have had serious issues in fielding an A grade team for 2017. It has also allowed these players to be challenged and playing at that level of competition has forced them to learn very rapidly."

The faith that Cubs has put in their young stocks has been supported by the selection of 6 of their young A grade players into the inaugural Baseball Queensland Junior Elite Regional Players Program. This program identifies the top Junior athletes in each Region who have potential to represent the State within the next two years.

Behrendorf is happy with the progress of the team so far throughout the CBL competition "They are faced with challenges every single week and not once have they turned away from a challenge. Everyone knows the game plan and everyone knows the more they learn and the more they challenge, the stronger we will be."

Cubs next game is against the League leading Cairns City Reds on Sunday at 2.30pm at the Trinity Beach Baseball Complex. With Masters and B grade games being played from 9am you should come on out and enjoy the atmosphere and the food.

Events

Bears Junior and Cubs Baseball is a family orientated club that encourages the participation of all kids regardless of ability or age. We are focussed on providing a fun family atmosphere that the whole family can enjoy.

In 2011 we introduced our inaugural and very successful“Seniors Training Night” and look forward to continuing that tradition. We are lucky at Bears Juniors to have a fantastic relationship with our Senior Team and have the luxury of them coaching our Juniors. It is great to see the Seniors interacting and being such good role models for our Junior players. This relationship also provides an avenue for our Junior players to continue onto the Senior League.
